TRUE GRIT
***************
IN THE MOVIE, TRUE GRIT, JOHN WAYNE, IS U.S. MARSHAL, ROOSTER COGBURN, QUESTIONING ONE OF TWO BROTHERS, CONCERNING THE WHEREABOUTS OF THE OUTLAW, NED PEPPER, PLAYED BY ROBERT DUVALL.
AFTER GIVING HIS BROTHER SEVERAL WARNINGS NOT TO TALK ABOUT NED, THE OLDER BROTHER STABS THE YOUNGER ONE IN THE TORSO.
IN A REFLEX ACTION, WAYNE PLUGS THE KNIFE USER, JEREMY SLATE. HE THEN INFORMS THE VICTIM, DENNIS HOPPER, THAT --->>
YOUR BROTHER KILLED YOU AND I DONE HIM LIKEWISE.
ONLY THE DUKE COULD PULL OFF THAT LINE AND MAKE IT SEEM LIKE A NATURAL THING TO SAY -- TELLING THE FELLOW THAT HE WAS KILLED; THEN CONTINUING TO ASK MORE QUESTIONS.
****************************************
LATER IN THE FILM, AFTER SHOOTING DOWN THREE OUTLAWS AND WOUNDING DUVALL; WAYNE IS PENNED UNDER HIS NOBLE STEED, BEAU, WHO WAS KILLED IN THE BATTLE. WAYNE CAN'T REACH HIS GUN WITH THE WEIGHT OF BEAU PRESSING DOWN ON HIM AND HE AGAIN MAKES A VERY PROFOUND AND POIGNANT STATEMENT ---
HE SPEAKS TO BEAU AND SAYS ----- YOU NEVER LET ME DOWN, UNTIL YOU DIED.
ONLY DEATH ITSELF COULD END BEAU'S FAITHFUL SERVICE AND WAYNE RECOGNIZES THAT FACT, WHILE ONLY SECONDS AWAY FROM MEETING HIS OWN DEATH.
JUST IN CASE YOU MISSED THIS GEM OF A PICTURE, GLENN CAMPBELL SHOOTS DUVALL FROM AFAR AND SAVES WAYNE, OF COURSE!
AT 3 A.M. THESE TWO IDEAS CAME INTO WHAT IS LEFT OF MY MIND, I DOUBT IF THEY WILL TRANSLATE TO EVERYONE, BUT I NEEDED TO RECORD THEM -NOW I HAVE AND I CAN GO TO BED.
